Housing Allocations Policy - we want your views
We want to do all we can to support people in housing need to find a safe, secure and affordable social housing home.
To help us to do that, we’ve been reviewing our Housing Allocations Policy to make sure it’s fit for purpose and reflects the housing challenges we face in 2025 and beyond.
We want to know what you think about these proposed change
Context
The last time the policy was reviewed was in 2019. Since that time the housing landscape has changed significantly both locally and nationally.
This has included:
- increased numbers of households on the Housing Register
- increased use of temporary and nightly paid accommodation locally
- a reduction in the availability of social housing locally and nationally
- the cost of living crisis
All of this has created a challenging environment that the Council and our partners have been working hard to respond to.
Making sure our Housing Allocations Policy remains fit for purpose and is meeting the needs of those on the Housing Register, while at the same time allowing the Council and our partners to make the best use of our available accommodation is key.

High-rise and low-rise bidding for families
One of the main changes being proposed to the policy is that families will now be able to bid on both high-rise and low-rise flats to help increase housing options for families and to reduce the waiting time for a suitable home.
Changing the criteria for who can join the Housing Register
Demand for social housing continues to significantly outweigh demand. To respond to this, another change being proposed is to change the criteria for who can join the Housing Register to make sure that local Nottingham people are prioritised.
